Description
1st place winner in a contest with over 1261 competing artists, Pen & Ink drawing of 1893 Duryea Motor wagon built by Charles and Frank Duryea, brothers from Illinois built what most historians believe as America's first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine. After the brothers worked in the manufacture of bicycles, they moved to Springfield where Frank built the Duryea Motor Wagon designed by Charles. Tested and ran on September 21,1893 in the town of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Frank built a second motorized carriage and entered it into America's first auto race sponsored by the Chicago Times-Herald, winning the race while driving through the first snow storm of the season. The Duryea brothers split & each built their own line of automobiles shortly after the race. Frank Duryea encouraged another important early pioneer Harry Knox to start building automobiles too. It is believed Knox had worked for awhile for Frank Duryea.
