Description
Harry Austin Knox born in 1875 just west of Springfield, Massachusetts in the town of Westfield. Westfield had been a small community surviving on farming, making bricks, producing cigars and horse whips. By the mid to late 19th century, Westfield changed when a canal was built for transportation of manufactured goods. Soon they started producing boilers, radiators, abrasives, textile machinery to use in the factories and precision instruments. Gilbert Noble lived in Westfield at the time young Harry Knox was born and growing up. Noble later became the founder of the Barnes & Noble Book Stores. Once Harry was old enough he moved to Springfield and attended the local vocational school graduating when he was nineteen years old. He was first in his class and his teachers considered him a genius from a young age able to design and invent parts to make things work, also was able to solve mechanical problems.
